This is a Mausoleum built on the Wuerttemberg mountain. It was commissioned by William II of Wuerttemberg for his wife Katharina. The interesting thing is that the King had Wirtemberg Castle removed in 1819 from that very place in order to build this Mausoleum. Obviously he loved his Queen very much.

On a technical note: This is my first vertorama upload that was created from 4 individually stitched vertoramas (one for each EV and an additional one with -4EV created with Adobe Camera RAW). Stitching the 32-bit files in Photoshop led to a massive loss of details again. Stitching the tone-mapped images resulted in very uneven lighting and color. Therefore, I had to do things differently here.

How it was shot

How it was stitched and tonemapped

  • Converted the RAWs to TIFFs using Adobe Camera RAW with the Five TIFFs method
  • Stitched one vertorama for each EV in Photoshop
  • Aligned and cropped the vertoramas in Photoshop
  • Merged and tone-mapped the resulting vertoramas using Photomatix Pro 4.0 (Detail Enhancer)
  • Saved the images as 16bit TIFFs

How it was post-processed

  • Post-processing was done in Photoshop
  • Slight perspective correction and cropping
  • Topaz Adjust on the entire image to get back the colors and the details [details]
  • Topaz Denoise (more aggressively on some parts) [details]
  • Topaz Infocus on the entire image for sharpening
  • Corrected some uneven lighting and colors in the dome using a saturation and a levels layer masked accordingly
  • Saturation layer on the white walls (slight desaturation)
  • Saturation layer on the floor (master)
  • Levels layer on the floor (more contrast)
  • Vignette effect using a masked fill layer [details]
  • Sharpening using the high-pass filter [details]
  • Watermarking [details]

    I have a question. In your new process you are talking about,creating the vertoramas for each EV, which means a total of 5-6 EVs. If I understand correctly, after that you are cropping and aligning each EV before bringing in to Photomatix for tone-mapping – right ? But what is the reason behind cropping and aligning each EV in Photoshop first before doing the tone-mapping in Photomatix ? Don’t you think we have to get to precise when we crop and align each EV. Is it better to tone-map all EVS first and then bring back in PS for crop and align and do all post-processing work. Just curious. I am working on a vertorama currently so would defintely look for your answer. Thanks again

      Hi Ratul,

      I really only used that technique as an alternative way to overcome the difficulties I had with my normal workflow here. It is not my standard way of doing HDR Vertoramas.

      The reason why I aligned and cropped before tone-mapping in Photomatix is that Photomatix would otherwise think the rugged edges of the uncropped image are part of it. This results in ugly toning artifacts on the edges. So I had to do it this way.

      My current workflow is it tone-map each section of the HDR Vertorama separately (using the same parameters) and then stitch them in Photoshop. This usually works quite well.
